Download the DMG, open it and drag Mac@Xa into your Applications folder. That is the install — there is no VPN or extra software to add.

The first time you open it, your Mac says it cannot — normal for an app that did not come from the App Store. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll near the bottom and you will see a line about Mac@Xa: click Open Anyway. Once only.

Open the app and say yes when macOS asks for Screen Recording and Accessibility. Without the first there is no picture; without the second your mouse and keyboard do nothing.

Choose what this machine is for: to be controlled, or to control another one. The app shows its own 9-digit ID straight away — nothing else to set up.
The app is signed by its developer but has not been through Apple's notarisation yet, so your Mac asks once the first time. Step 2 above is how you answer — after that it opens like any other app.

The app has been submitted to the App Store and is waiting on Apple's review. Once it clears, you find Mac@Xa on the App Store and install it like any other app. Until then, anyone comfortable with Xcode can build it from source — signed with a free Apple ID it runs for seven days per signature.
